Sunil Nair is a Warsaw-based artist whose paintings explore the emotional dynamics of crowds, identity, and human connection. Working in oil and acrylic, he creates expressive, densely populated compositions where masked figures navigate the tension between belonging and isolation.
Born in India and shaped by experiences across several continents, Nair has lived and worked in Poland for more than two decades, where Warsaw has become both his home and the primary setting for his artistic practice. His work draws inspiration from the energy, anxiety, and contradictions of contemporary urban life. His figures, often mistaken for clowns, function instead as metaphors for the emotional masks people wear to conceal vulnerability, fear, and longing.
Before returning to fine art, Nair spent more than three decades working internationally as an award-winning photographer, commercial film director, and creative leader, including serving as Creative Director for Instagram and Facebook at Meta. This background continues to inform the cinematic compositions and psychological depth of his work.
Through painting and sculpture, Nair transforms personal experience into universal narratives, inviting viewers to confront the delicate balance between individuality and collective existence.

Lost in the Crowd is a deeply personal series inspired by my fear of crowds, a fear that first revealed itself while I was living in Mumbai in my early twenties. It is ironic that, having grown up in one of the world's most populous countries, it was only after moving to Mumbai that I discovered just how deeply crowds unsettled me. Every day, the packed suburban trains became an exercise in anxiety, standing trapped among strangers, counting down the stations until I reached my stop. But the hardest moment came when the train doors opened and I had to push through the surge of people rushing in. The sight of that waiting crowd, an overwhelming sea of faces, became permanently etched in my memory.
Years later, I began painting those strangers, not as portraits, but as masked figures often mistaken for clowns. They represent the emotional masks we wear to conceal fear, vulnerability, sadness, and the pressure to appear joyful. Perhaps painting them this way was my attempt to make the crowd less familiar, less threatening, or simply to capture the surreal intensity of those memories.
Working in oil and acrylic, I build dense, expressive compositions that explore the fragile space between individuality and belonging. Lost in the Crowd is ultimately about the paradox of modern life: how we can be surrounded by thousands of people, yet feel profoundly alone.
